On Thursday, October 5th, the class and I got to visit SWALE in Bronx. It was a nice excuse for myself to take the subway to Bronx for the first time. The other time I was in Bronx was for a school trip to Bronx Zoo. (:
We got to meet Mary Mattingly the artist behind SWALE. I enjoyed listening to the back story. She mentioned that New Yorkers are not allowed to harvest food on land. And questioned what if food produce was not an expensive commodity anymore? SWALE, a floating food forest, was once a barge that transported sand. To see the barge repurposed to inform and educate the community was inspiring.
Below are the two pictures of my plants
Unfortunately, my daylily was not in bloom. However, you can see the swordlike basal leaves that are standing upright.
On the other hand, my bok choy was in a small corner. I always eat bok choy at home and I was surprised to see it before it was harvested. The growth of the vegetable is beautiful that it looks like a composite flower (top view). From the side view, there are "levels" of leaves (not the right way to describe it. Please correct me in describing it).
Here are more pictures of our dinner time:
